The Women of “RBG.”
Filmmakers Julie Cohen and Betsy West waited two years to interview the notorious Ruth Bader Ginsburg for their megahit documentary RBG. When they finally sat down with her, they had just over an hour to get what they needed. But, “her strategy worked pretty well because it helped us focus what we needed to talk to her about.”
After all, it was a “ginormous puzzle” to assemble, from the Supreme Court Justice’s “extremely big life.” The critically acclaimed documentary chronicles RBG’s professional and personal life (including a poignant love story), her legacy as a lawyer, and her influential cases in shaping the rights of women. Plus an inside look at her grueling workout.
The conversation with Directors Betsy West and Julie Cohen, plus the Executive Producer, CNN’s VP Amy Entelis, was moderated by Professor June Cross, after a Columbia J-School screening of the film. All three panelists are affiliated as either graduates or current professors. The filmmakers talked about the power of optimism, the mystifying rules for filming inside the Supreme Court, and how RBG herself reacted to seeing the film for the first time - in front of the filmmakers and a sold out audience at the Sundance Film Festival.
