“I hope that the film could serve as a record. Fifty years later, 100 years later when people truly want to understand, the official version of history is not the only version.“ -- Nanfu Wang
Award-winning director Nanfu Wang (Hooligan Sparrow, I Am Another You) talks with Columbia Journalism Professor Betsy West (RBG) about her film One Child Nation. The documentary, part exposé and part personal history, explores the far-reaching impacts of China’s One Child Policy. Wang was compelled to make the film which IndieWire called “a startling account of collective trauma” after the birth of her son.
Wang uncovers shocking evidence and emotional accounts of crimes committed by ordinary Chinese citizens who said “they had to follow orders.” She discusses the challenges of interviewing her own family about the tough subject; how she stayed safe in China while working on the film; and she shares some of her personal experiences growing up under the one-child policy. You can stream One Child Nation on Amazon Prime, or go to https://www.onechildnation.com for a schedule of theatrical screenings.
